Bay Area, San Francisco
I like to plan engagement sessions really well with my couples, while leaving some room for ‘targets of opportunity’ and making allowance for the unpredictable San Francisco weather. In this case we had a perfect California golden sunset and took full advantage of it.
Laura and Oliver are a really fun & beautiful couple, completely at ease in front of the camera especially after an Irish coffee ;). Later in the day I leaned out of his sisters truck while we crossed the Golden Gate bridge. Just an epic engagement session.
The back lighting of the sunset was really strong, so I knew I would not be able to get both the beautiful sky and the details in the couple and the bridge. So I decided to go with a silhouette and coached them into giving me a distinctive profile. Her skirt and high heels and his cowboy boots really helped define the silhouette and make it understandable, an ‘easy read’. I gave them a couple of ideas but they just ran with it. At one point I yelled ‘Propose!’, and he did. Bam!
As in every San Francisco photo shoot, there were a couple of homeless guys I tried to hide in the lower left corner. All the tourists recognized what we were trying to do and graciously gave us a few minutes of complete access.
I used the tree to block the sun to reduce flare; I don’t mind flare in general, but in this case I wanted a sharp, contrasty image.
Shot with a Nikon D800, 70200 VR2 at 70mm. I jacked up the WB all the way up to accentuate the yellows. To meter I just eyeballed it, dialled it in in Manual, took a test shot and then just shot without worrying about it for the rest of that scene.
In post I wanted a little clarity, saturation, dodge & burn, added some grain to eliminate the banding.
The couple loved it! I have shot since doing this the wedding of two of her friends, and his sisters wedding is coming up soon.
The only problem, if I can call it that is every couple now wants it. Which is challenging from a creativity / staying fresh perspective, and from a weather perspective as this spot is often shrouded in fog.
