Tell us a little about yourself
Right. Oh. Erm? I’m definitely laid back, I do know that. I also like to keep things simple.
How do you think or would like people to describe you?
Probably, laid back!
Tell us a little bit about the wedding day
Nicola and Marks day was relaxed, and although traditional at heart, the atmosphere throughout the whole day was wonderfully warm and relaxed.
How did you get into wedding photography?
I liked taking photos and I disliked working in an office.
How long have you been a wedding photographer?
Around 5 years now. I’ve never looked back.
Can you share how you’ve made your wedding photography business a success? Any mistakes you made along the way
Hard work, and understanding both your product and your target client market. I’ve made just about as many mistakes as most people, but I’ve tried to learn as much from each one as I could.
What do you think a bride or groom should be looking for and not looking for in terms of wedding photography packages?
Kind of depends, everyone’s different. I only offer either digital photography, with the option of an album, this suits the guys that book me. Others offer canvas products and signing boards etc. I wouldn’t know about that sort of thing.
How do you advertise yourself and what for you has really worked?
I think building up a strong positive reputation has been my working factor.
Why do you think people hire you?
Because I’m laid back and like to keep things simple. I sometimes take a few nice photos too.
How many weddings do you average per year?
I’m more than happy sitting around the 36 mark, although this year has exceeded that.
Whose wedding would you love to shoot?
Jeez, really no idea! Let me come back to you on that one.
If you were asked to shoot a destination wedding, where would you hope it would be?
Easy, Mykonos, Greece.
What equipment do you have for a typical wedding day?
Two Nikon D750’s. And I shoot with 135+85+35+20. Although 90% of the day it’s 85+35 a flash gun for the dancing.
What is the most challenging thing about a wedding?
Producing image that meet or exceed your own standards, which are always set much higher than client expectations.
Do you have an approach to a wedding?
Not hugely. I break the day down in my head into manageable chunks, and take it from there.
Who or what inspires you?
Photographers who use the most challenging of light to their advantage, they inspire me.
Best & Worst marketing idea so far?
I’m not great with marketing if I’m honest. I once thought about a wedding photography fair, for photography only. At least you’d know that people coming through the door were not looking for cake vendors!
If you weren’t a photographer, what would you be?
A painter or sculptor.
Share your favourite image of the day and why.
This image of Mark, by the window. Really simple, I know, but I like the light hitting his face and the negative space.
Do you have any goals for the future photography related or otherwise?
Only to see how far I can go.
What do you think is key to being a successful wedding photographer?
Drive and ambition and a lot of it.
Are there any other wedding photographers whose work inspires you, can be a well know photographer or somebody you’ve stumbled across?
A few, I tend not to focus too much on other peoples work. Although I’m enjoying viewing Gabe McClintock’s work at the moment.
Proudest moment so far. Photography related or otherwise?
It might well still be yet to come.
