Wedding Photographer Buckinghamshire Paul Rogers
The Crown Plaza Hotel
I’m a documentary wedding photographer based in London, UK. I’ve been a photojournalist at The Times newspaper in London since 1998 covering news and features around the world. That experience of conveying a complex story in a single image or series in a photo essay is what I now bring to my wedding clients.
This is 4 year old Imogen having her hair done in a hotel room before her Mother and Father’s wedding in Buckinghamshire, UK. Imogen’s Mother is behind me having her make-up done, and there are also bridesmaids and parents in the room as well. It was pretty chaotic, and while I like to shoot wide scenes as place setting images, I’m also always looking to isolate subjects and simplify the composition. I am kneeling down with a 50mm lens – the low angle has cleaned the background clutter so only the wall is visible. I had noticed Imogen fidgeting, and having young children myself, kept an eye on the scene. I shot a couple of frames, then turned to photograph her Mum. When I looked back, Imogen had this perfect bored expression, and raised her hand at the same time that I raised my camera. I shot a couple of frames immediately – luckily the lens was still focused on her, then re-focused, by which time her expression had changed and the image was gone. No one else in the room had seen it.
I always use AV and the compensation dial with auto ISO. This would have been plus a stop or slightly less, to compensate for the light wall behind Imogen.
Minimal processing and conversion in Lightroom. I don’t use anything like VSCO, preferring to treat each image, or sequence of images separately.
The couple love this image which sums up their daughters personality perfectly. I like to be able to surprise couples with the images I deliver, hopefully capturing moments they just did not see or notice. To combine that with conveying someone’s personality or a relationship in an image is the perfect way for me to make a living!
