We are Gabriela and Marius working together under the name of photochic. I can’t say we can be 100% included on a wedding photography style, because we like to say it’s a hybrid one. Coming from the journalism side (Marius worked about 6 years for some Romanian media companies) our pyramid solid base is documenting the wedding without interfering in our clients actions, but knowing and trying to understand better the brides. In the last years we’ve poured over our style a bit of chic fashion and portraiture. As a conclusion our style is to have happy brides. 🙂
I am a man who likes to party a lot, so during my receptions I always stay in the middle of the guests, dancing with them, with the camera in front of my eyes. I saw this man in the image partying a lot with his friends, I took his tie with two fingers, I put it in the front of my lens, and BANG: I shoot this awesome image. Technically, I always love to have backlights, so I had four flashes anchored on stands and a 24 mm lens (it’s almost all I use for receptions). I tried to fill over 60% of my frame with the subject without cropping it (the image isn’t cropped). The major challenge I faced was to put the subject over the girl behind him, so, as you see I didn’t manage to do that because the girl is coming out of his head. First images were taken at f/5.6 and I realized I cannot put him in the frame and having a clean background because they were moving constantly. So I decided to open the aperture with 2 stops in order to isolate better my subject from the background. So the EXIF looks like that: camera/ Canon 5D Mark II, lens/ Canon 24 mm/f 1.4, ISO/ 800, shutter speed 1/160, F stop/2.8, Manual mode, all 4 flashes on manual mode fired, metering mode: spot.
I decided to convert the frame in black and white because there were too many colors distracting from the subject and because his reaction looks better in b/w.
This was taken during a wedding party that took place at The Corvin Castle, also known as Hunyad Castle, one of the most impressive medieval constructions in Romania. If you come here, you have to visit this place.
