Great relationships take a lot of work. With the divorce rate at nearly 50 percent, you must put some time and attention into matters of the heart. Everyone wants to be that couple that can’t get enough of each other. However, these kinds of relationships don’t just happen; they take time and cultivation to build. If you want that fairytale romance that makes others envious, then here are some tips to ensure your relationship is happy and healthy.

1. Be Realistic

Most people have an unrealistic view of what a relationship looks and feels like. It’s normal to be crazy with infatuation in the beginning, but remember that those intense feelings you have won’t last. First and foremost, you need to be real with each other. The fires of romance will always burn, but they may not be as frequent in 10 years as they are during the first year. The longer you are together, the more you will morph into a comfortable state of coexistence. It’s deeper and stronger than the infatuation phase, but few survive it.

2. Spend Quality Time Together

In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s easy to negate quality time together. It doesn’t have to be something significant each week, but make sure that you have time for one-on-one. You could watch a favorite television program, have dinner together and talk about your day, or do something spontaneous and out of the ordinary. It doesn’t matter what you do, make sure to include them in some of the aspects of your life. No matter how busy you are, you need to ensure that they rank on the scale of importance.

3. Never Go To Bed Angry

It’s easy to take your frustrations out on the one you love. Little spats will come up throughout life. Remember to settle things before you go to bed. The old saying to never go to bed angry makes for a long and happy relationship. You’re not promised tomorrow, and you want to ensure they know how you feel, even if you’re a bit upset.

4. Spend Time Apart

It’s great to spend as much time as possible together, but it’s equally vital that you have time apart. Everyone has friends and family that predate the relationship. While there are things that you can do as a unit, there should also be plenty of time to spend alone. There’s nothing wrong with going out and having a good time. It gives you more things to talk about and can enhance communication.

5. Don’t Try to Change Each Other

One of the most significant issues going into a relationship is that people try to change one another. Sure, leaving the cap off the toothpaste is annoying and probably a trainable offense, but you cannot change a personality or defect. If a person has cheated in all their past relationships, you can bet that at some point they will cheat on you.

 

While it’s nice to think that you can change them, it’s probably not going to happen. Have realistic expectations about what you can change and what you cannot. Chances are the same issues that annoy you, in the beginning, will cause significant problems throughout the entire relationship.

6. Remember The Little Things

It’s the smallest gestures that mean the most. Little things that make someone feel amazing can go a long way. Why not get the special someone in your life something made with lab grown diamonds? They will love the sentiment and that you made an extra effort to make them smile. You can also try love letters left by their side of the bed. Why not get flowers or a card for no reason at all? Go out of your way to do the small things and make them feel amazing.

If you want to stay happy and keep your relationship flourishing, then it will require some effort. You will get as much out of it as you put into it. Those fairy tale romances are few and far between. However, your connection will be as good as the time and effort you put into it.
