I search for most of my references outside of wedding photography.

One day looking over the Internet I discovered the amazing work of the photographer Dan Mountford about double exposition. After I found out about the technique I did some thorough research on how to achieve it.

With film, when you take a photo and the darker part (shadow) could be exposed again, so we took another picture using the same film and over the shadows another image was recorded, it worked like photoshop layers, where the highlights are a layer and the shadows was another layer.

I made countless tests at home until I realized how the technique worked and I had an idea for a picture with a bride and a tree. When I came to shoot the image I had some extra time with the bride. I asked her position herself in the back light of the window and then did the shot, she wasn’t completely dark but the background was overexposed.

Right out of the hall I saw a tree and then took a picture to use with the 1st image. I did some trials and unwittingly realized that the branches of the tree appeared to be veins in her body . I redid the picture until it fitted perfectly with the image. Photos captured with a strong back light with plenty of black and white parts are ideal for this kind of idea .

In Nikon you can select images to make double exposure, they don't even need be taken in the same order and you can make some exposure adjustments if you need too. Canon has the advantage of using live view to compose the best overlap. I'm not a technical expert, technical know-how can be found quickly on the Internet. I think the reason this shot works is the double exposure of the branches giving the look of veins.

I see double exposure pictures being made out there and throughout my career I just wanted to do this photo. I'm very pleased that it has been given several awards by several associations . I don’t like much fads in wedding photography. I think the technique has to be very well thought out and conceived not to fall into a cliche.
