Wedding Photographer Tuscany Francesco Spighi Photography shoots a wedding at Hotel Wailea (Maui Island - Hawaii), Italy
Real weddings from real wedding photographers & real couples around the world.
Tell us a little about yourself??I'm Francesco, an Italian wedding photographer living in Tuscany. I'm a daydreamer and a life-enjoyer. I love to look at the world like children do, marveling over the little things that usually people don't care about. I love my family, nature, getting lost somewhere, and dreaming! I'm easy going and a bit crazy at the same time. I'm excited every time I take my camera out; my camera is a part of me, often replacing my words and it's the key instrument for me to help me join in the life of my clients.
How do you think or would like people to describe you?I prefer to fill this field with what Alessandro and Laura wrote about me after seeing the photos of their wedding:
'Francesco is in love with his life, and in love with love, and that transfers to his photographs. He lives with his heart open and you can see that clearly admiring any of the stories he told with his camera. We could not find a better fit for us, Francesco was quite simply the best choice we could make! We are so happy with his work! And we were amazed by how much he liked what he was doing.
He even put his camera at risk when he jumped in the water with us the day after the wedding to shoot the trashing of our dresses in the breathtaking waters of Maui! We could tell he was sharing our excitement the day of our wedding, the day before and the day after. He truly wanted us to have the best days of our lives, which we did, and he certainly contributed to it significantly! He was always saying: just live and enjoy the moment, the photographs will automatically come out beautiful!
Francesco was being too modest of course, photos don't just come out well by themselves, his extraordinary ability to capture the moment is fundamental. But there is some truth in what he was saying: if you let go of your emotions and enjoy the experience, Francesco's photographs will simply be beautiful! If you are someone who fully lives and enjoys the moment, he is your guy!'
Tell us a little bit about the wedding day?The wedding day went really fast. Each wedding is a different story. I try to be there, not just a storyteller but like a friend. You know, the wedding photographer is the guy who spends more time with the bridal couple of all the other people present on the wedding day. I like to be easy and really friendly, I want to be a mate and not just a vendor, in this way I can do my work at my best.
How did you get into wedding photography?I was a photography enthusiast. The photographer of my wedding saw some of my pictures on Facebook and asked me to follow him sometimes as second shooter. One year later I was in the business, with my site, my brand, and my VAT number.
How long have you been a wedding photographer?Everything started 4 years ago.
Can you share how you've made your wedding photography business a success? Any mistakes you made along the way?I tried immediately to have a mid/long term plan, The most important thing in photography business is that you'll spend 80% of time in managing the business and 20% shooting and this fact must be clear from the beginning. So if you love photography but you don't like the business stuff don't make the mistake to try to became a professional photographer. You'll start hating photography in few years.
Mistakes? I did a lot, they are the best way to learn.
What do you think a bride or groom should be looking for and not looking for in terms of wedding photography packages? They want to have fun that day. We must not forget this. They are not looking for complication, questions, or troubles. We've to be part of the solution, and not the origin of the problems.
How do you advertise yourself and what for you has really worked?I did a great job on the Google side I think , and it works really well for me. At the moment I'm looking also for some featuring to have a different audience, so here we are!
Why do you think people hire you?I'm easy and friendly, and I think it can be clear by spending some time on my site. Then, I try to photography real love, no fake scenes. My pictures are really natural, and I think there are a lot of clients that love this. At least the ones that just want to be themselves.
How many weddings do you average per year?20/30
Whose wedding would you love to shoot?Very difficult question. I think the Valentino Rossi wedding day will be crazy enough!
If you were asked to shoot a destination wedding, where would you hope it would be?I went to Hawaii for this wedding! Can I ask for anything more? If I have to choose another place I'd like to fly to San Francisco to shoot a wedding there. But I’d like also to come back to Hawaii, everything went by too quickly while I was there.
What equipment do you have for a typical wedding day?Two cameras, Nikon d810, and five prime lenses: 20/28/45/58/85.
What is the most challenging thing about a wedding.
Do you have an approach to a wedding?I'm really instinctive so I usually follow my inspiration and my feelings.
Who or what inspires you?Everything, I think. My children, the world around us, the movies I see and the books I read.
Best & Worst marketing idea so far?The best idea is to follow your own vision without trying to grab from other wedding photographers. I've yet to discover the worst.
If you weren't a photographer, what would you be?I was a mechanical engineer, but my dream was to become a designer.
Share your favourite image of the day and why?I love this photos because it speaks the truth. They're in love, they are having fun, and they totally are at ease with me and with all their guests. It's a great moment, a beautiful memory for them in the years to come.
Do you have any goals for the future photography related or otherwise? My goal now is to increase my destination weddings. Then I'd love to shoot a same sex wedding. I strongly support love. In Italy we've a really difficult situation in this sense, because at the moment these kind of weddings are not recognized as legal unions.
Considering my photographic style I don't think there are differences with a 'traditional' wedding. I love to shoot emotions, this is my main goal. Looking at all the difficulties they could have in getting married in Italy, I'm pretty sure these weddings will be full of emotion! I definitely want to support any kind of love.
What do you think is key to being a successful wedding photographer? When I discover this, I will be a successful wedding photographer and I will come back here to share with you! I think that to start a good business we have to be honest. With our clients, and with ourself.
Are there any other wedding photographers whose work inspires you, can be a well know photographer or somebody you've stumbled across?A lot of photographers inspire me. I think one of the most important is Daniele Vertelli, which I am lucky to also call a friend.
Proudest moment so far. Photography related or otherwise?I'm a proud father, and the thing that makes me happier is to collect great memories of my family. I want to guarantee to my children a complete photographic inheritance of our life together.
