Real weddings from real wedding photographers & real couples around the world.
Tell us a little about yourself??I live in Sussex with my husband and 2 gorgeous boys. I love photography (of course) music and countryside walks with my boys, especially this time of year as I absolutely adore Autumn. I also think there is nothing better than a nice cup of tea!!
How do you think or would like people to describe you?Laid back, easy to get on with, good sense of humor, dependable, honest
Tell us a little bit about the wedding day?Ryan and Hayley’s was by far one of my favourite weddings this year. The whole day was at Hartsfield Manor, which is a beautiful manor house in Betchworth Surrey. They wanted a really relaxed feel to their photography on the day and wanted lots of natural shots of them and their friends and family. Everyone at the Wedding was fantastic and full of laughs so I had endless opportunities for some great people shots for the whole 9 hours I was with them.
How did you get into wedding photography?I have been into photography for 15 years and shot my first wedding in 2005 for a friend, i then for the next few years shot numerous weddings for other friends and friends of friends and absolutely fell in love with it and decided this is wanted a wanted to do. After several years of building up my style and portfolio I decided 2 years ago after having my family that I shall take it as my full time career and I haven't looked back since! I love my job! I love telling the story of someones wedding day through my photography.
How long have you been a wedding photographer?8 years in total, 2 of which full time.
Can you share how you've made your wedding photography business a success? Any mistakes you made along the way?I strongly believe that a combination of my style of photography and my personality has helped my business leaps and bounds. Creating natural shots that show the true personality of the bride and groom and their guests and creating a natural story of the wedding day in a style of photography that is completely timeless. I also think its important to take the time to meet with couples before they book to take time to get to know one another.
What do you think a bride or groom should be looking for and not looking for in terms of wedding photography packages?Bride and grooms should look for a style of photography that suits them. Photography is such a personal choice. So that, along with finding a photographer they feel comfortable with and can offer a great portfolio and packages to their budget.
How do you advertise yourself and what for you has really worked? At the moment I only pay to advertise on one site which is Love Sussex Weddings, which has secured me quite a few weddings for next year. I also use facebook, twitter and word of mouth is the best advertising anyone can have. I recently started my own blog and appear on other blogs and hopefully some wedding magazine “real weddings†soon.
Why do you think people hire you?I think my personality and easy going nature really helps, asides from my great photography of course! I am told that I am super easy to get along with and work in a natural and unobtrusive manor. So many couples tell me how pleased they were with the way i work after the wedding.
How many weddings do you average per year?At the moment a shoot about 20 weddings a year.
Whose wedding would you love to shoot?I can't think of anyone in particular. Sorry.
If you were asked to shoot a destination wedding, where would you hope it would be?I would love to shoot a wedding in Italy. I was a guest at a wedding a few years back in Sorrento on the Amalfie coast and fell in love with it. Such a beautiful place.
What equipment do you have for a typical wedding day?Currently a Canon 5d mk11, plus backup body and numerous lenses, its an ever growing kitbag!
What is the most challenging thing about a wedding.
Do you have an approach to a wedding? Not really, asides from a few semi-directed shots of the bride and groom after the ceremony, I prefer to shoot natural shots as they happen so the day kind of runs itself, I just make sure I'm in the right place at the right time.
Who or what inspires you?My family, especially my 2 sons.
Best & Worst marketing idea so far?Luckily for me my husband is a web designer and has connections in the SEO world so I have learnt quite quickly what works and what doesn’t without falling into any bad marketing ideas or scams. Blogging is by far the best way forward at the moment, google loves it!!
If you weren't a photographer, what would you be?I would probably work with animals in some way, if i had realised my career path sooner I would really have loved to have worked for the BBC filming wildlife documentaries. David Attenborough is my hero!
Share your favourite image of the day and why?I love this image because it is so full of natural smiles and really shows the true personality of this lovely couple. There is nothing better than a bride an groom having a good giggle during the Bride and Groom “on their own†shots.
Do you have any goals for the future photography related or otherwise?Just to keep improving on my photography and working with lovely bride and grooms. Spending as much time with my young family as possible and to try to spend some more time traveling and seeing the world. Maybe destination Wedding photography will be somewhere in the future.
What do you think is key to being a successful wedding photographer?Being able to take good photos is quite key but having a good business head is extremely important. Being a good people person and being able to talk to people from all walks of life.
Are there any other wedding photographers whose work inspires you, can be a well know photographer or somebody you've stumbled across? There are far too many photographers whose work inspires me. After spending a week on the Trained Eye course this year I really admire David McNeil and Jodie Chapman.
Proudest moment so far. Photography related or otherwise?Being a mum to 2 great boys is the best thing I have ever achieved.
