Tell us a little about yourself??

Two people in a big house with great views and lots of pizza in the oven!

Photographically we're Peter & Sara, a husband and wife Manchester based photography team, with a passion for great imagery.

How do you think or would like people to describe you?

Most people often book us because they say our photographs have a unique look and feel. Also we photograph quite a few other photographers weddings, so I guess our style and technique is appreciated by those in the know!

Tell us a little bit about the wedding day?

Tomoyo and David's day was a little different, as they'd officially tied the knot already, but very quietly and without family and friends around – so this was the official wedding, but not really!

As they were already married they were happy to see each other before the ceremony and both had finishing touches to getting ready in the same room, along with their son Henry.

As the timing were quite tight we'd decide to do some portrait shots before the ceremony, in Greenwich Park – these London shots were important to Tomoyo and David as they were very soon to move to Japan.

How did you get into wedding photography?

Through being a Graphic Artist. A few people entrusted me to see their wedding through an ‘artistic eye’, even though I'd never shot a wedding before! Since then we've gone from strength to strength and never looked back :)

How long have you been a wedding photographer?

May 2008, for a few years before that on a more casual basis.

Can you share how you've made your wedding photography business a success? Any mistakes you made along the way?

Most of our work comes via recommendations, which we really like, as it means that not only were our previous brides and grooms very happy with our service and wedding images, their friends were too and looking for a similar style of photography to cover their wedding day.

We concentrate on an artistic slant to the portraits, with additional lighting where appropriate. We feel this is one of our signature characteristics.

Not any big ones really, I guess that's a bit boring though! The little ones you need to learn from. But we can honestly say every bride and groom have been delighted :)

What do you think a bride or groom should be looking for and not looking for in terms of wedding photography packages?

Initially the most important thing is to get on with the photographer and like their style of their images.

After that the price always plays a part, it is the real world after all. If albums are offered make sure you like the style of album available, can it be upgraded, how much freedom is there in the proofing of the final product.
I’d sooner stay positive with this but, please make sure your wedding photographer can show you samples of similar weddings to your own, in terms of season, venue etc.

Also, if you’re having a winter wedding make sure they understand lighting, as there’ll be precious little natural light in Winter.

How do you advertise yourself and what for you has really worked?

Currently we don't do too much advertising. Recommendations do tend to work the best, people trust personal recommendations above anything else. We also have a reasonable amount of bookings via organic Google searches too.

Why do you think people hire you?

Because they love our style of photography and get on with us great, we are also quite accommodating and open to new ideas and challenges, which I think appeals to quite a lot of people.

How many weddings do you average per year?

Pixies in the Cellar image 10

Whose wedding would you love to shoot?

Helena Bonham Carter & Tim Burton ;)

Pixies in the Cellar image 11

If you were asked to shoot a destination wedding, where would you hope it would be?

Paris!. I’d love to shoot a wedding or post-wedding in this gorgeous city.

What equipment do you have for a typical wedding day?

I use: 2 x Nikon D4 and a Nikon D800 with 35 f1.4, 85 f1.4 and 14-24 f2.8. Sara uses: Nikon D3S and a Nikon D750 50 f1.4 and 85 f1.4 or 70-200 f2.8 depending on season/light. Alongside this for lighting we work primarily with speedlights and pocket wizards. Plus the occasional 1000w off-cam studio flash to overpower the sun.

What is the most challenging thing about a wedding.

Do you have an approach to a wedding?

As a general rule we like to be as invisible as possible and blend into the background. The only times we become more obvious is during more formal group shots, if these are requested and during the portrait session, although this works much better if the bride and groom just do there own thing whilst we tag along and capture some real moments of the newly weds. Occasionally we take a little more control when requested by the bride and groom, especially when lighting is involved. Always with a sense of fun though.

Pixies in the Cellar image 15

Who or what inspires you?

Art, movies, tv dramas all have great lighting and composition to learn and be inspired from. Also, some fashion photography helps too

Pixies in the Cellar image 16

Best & Worst marketing idea so far?

The worst is press advertising, I feel those days are slipping away. The best idea we’ve yet to discover.

Pixies in the Cellar image 17

If you weren't a photographer, what would you be?

Well before this I was a Graphic Designer and Sara a Research Biochemist...so I guess that’s where we'd be still!

Romantically, maybe water gypsies on a canal somewhere or in the sun in the South of France :)

Share your favourite image of the day and why?

I love the shot of them embraced amidst the grandeur, architectural prowess and symmetry of the Royal Naval Museum. Sara – Kimono bridesmaid with a pint of real ale at the bar :)

Do you have any goals for the future photography related or otherwise?

You need to constantly evolve and look for new ideas and ways to tell the story of a wedding day. Ultimately, to bring together documentary and portrait into one unified style… I do love a challenge. We also love creating our own lighting, so pushing the boundaries of what can be done, to achieve jaw dropping images.

What do you think is key to being a successful wedding photographer?

Having strong ideas of the kind of images you'd like to achieve, whilst working within the framework of a wedding, it's a celebration of two peoples lives, so keeping the photo shoot aspect as discreet as possible. Oh yes, and working very very hard.

Pixies in the Cellar image 21

Are there any other wedding photographers whose work inspires you, can be a well know photographer or somebody you've stumbled across?

Sergei Ivanov, Barrie Downie and originally Damien Lovegrove.

Proudest moment so far. Photography related or otherwise?

Photography-wise… Being acknowledged by my peers early on in Pixies career. Not forgetting seeing the delight and enthusiasm in the faces of our brides and grooms on receiving their photographs/albums, this is priceless!

Personal… Giving my Sara a huge hug on being declared husband and wife this year, after being together for 21 years :-)
