Tell us a little about yourself??

Hello, my name is Catherine (everyone ends up calling me Cathy!), 26 and living with my wonderful boyfriend on the Swiss side of the Geneva lake, in Lausanne. I have always loved creating, which could go from painting, crafting, web designing or photographing for some years now. I must say I love diversity in photography. Apart from documenting weddings, I also shoot sports, by following an American football team in my city and by covering sporting events such as triathlons. Last but not least, I enjoy capturing beautiful landscapes in silent and remote places.

How do you think or would like people to describe you?

Passionate because I put my whole heart into what I create, as well as perfectionist and detailed-oriented to always fulfill my clients’ expectations.

Tell us a little bit about the wedding day?

I love having a photo journalistic approach to storytelling a wedding day. I am always looking forward to great moments and emotions, therefore staying receptive to everything that can happen, from near to far the bride and groom that will make enjoyable photos and memories for the couple.

How did you get into wedding photography?

I’ve always loved looking at beautiful wedding photos and admiring other famous photographers work. I second shot with a local photographer for a while and then decided I wanted to go on with experiencing such tremendous moments and intense emotions whilst shooting!

How long have you been a wedding photographer?

It is my 3rd year in wedding photography.

Can you share how you've made your wedding photography business a success? Any mistakes you made along the way?

I focus on delivering creative and unique imagery for my clients, while always listening to what the bride and groom want and expect, building a wonderful and unique experience with me.

I think we always make mistakes but the important point is to learn from them and become better at what we do!

What do you think a bride or groom should be looking for and not looking for in terms of wedding photography packages?

A bride and groom should first look at the photographer’s images and make sure they love the style and would see themselves in those pictures because, let’s face it, it is with the eyes of their photographer that they will remember their day and live again all the emotions.

Then, I would highly recommend meeting the photographer to make sure thet get along. Why spend a day with someone you don’t feel at ease with? Indeed, I always become friends with the brides and grooms I’ve photographed!

How do you advertise yourself and what for you has really worked?

I am part of different professional photographer associations and listings but I mostly love referrals because it’s a way to find great people that I know will value photography at its best!

LunaCat Studio image 8

Why do you think people hire you?

I think they hire me for my photography style first, my ‘eye’ and also my personality and philosophy that they can see when they first meet me.

How many weddings do you average per year?

It varies.

Whose wedding would you love to shoot?

I would love to shoot a winter wedding in the Swiss mountains. It would be quite challenging but I love shooting snow as it brings a wonderful and magical scene (don’t forget I love shooting lovely landscapes). It would be my personal preference but I love every wedding I shoot because the bride and groom have always put all their heart in organizing and making this day their most beautiful day!

If you were asked to shoot a destination wedding, where would you hope it would be?

I must say I spent one month in New Zealand traveling and discovering gorgeous scenery and I fell in love with their landscapes. That would be nice to try a destination wedding there, knowing the weather can change quite quickly, believe me!

What equipment do you have for a typical wedding day?

I shoot with Canon pro gear with 2 bodies (5D Mark III and 1D III). I stick to a low number of lenses to stay light during the day (17-40, 50, 70-200). I also love using my LED video light for creative lighting with my couple and for shooting details.

What is the most challenging thing about a wedding.

I have no fear about the pace of a wedding as I am used to shooting sports. The major challenge is trying to have guests relaxed when we take pictures of them, but that generally does not last long when you make them laugh and put them at ease.

LunaCat Studio image 14

Do you have an approach to a wedding?

I always know the couple’s expectations concerning the crucial photos for them and the family but they usually are confident in my approach. Therefore, I never come with any approach but I keep in mind the different personalities of my bride and groom so I can better feel their intimate moments.

LunaCat Studio image 15

Who or what inspires you?

I get inspired by everything. I love looking at different kind of photographic styles, not only wedding photography because you can easily end up copying photographers instead of just being inspired. Since I also take landscapes and sports photos, I love being inspired by great artists in those fields and try to implement those approaches in my personal wedding photography.

Best & Worst marketing idea so far?

I think I’m too new in the wedding business to be able to answer this question.

LunaCat Studio image 17

If you weren't a photographer, what would you be?

I am a medicinal chemist working in the field of anticancer drugs. Even in this scientific background, I have always been focusing on helping the human being live better.

Share your favourite image of the day and why?

Weddings are always a fun place for children. They love playing with the bride’s dress, running everywhere, well, just like kids! At this wedding, there were 2 adorable children and I saw one hiding under the guests’ coats. I saw a nice composition but I had to wait for some time before the small child put his head out of the coats to come into the light and look at what was happening on the left of the picture. That’s what I was waiting for and I took this picture at that precise moment!

Do you have any goals for the future photography related or otherwise?

I have indeed some projects on the back on my mind for the future! I always want the best for my clients so I am on the hunt for better products and services every time I can.

What do you think is key to being a successful wedding photographer?

In our digital era with people used to having so many pictures delivered from the day.

I think we must innovate and show outstanding photography skills in composition and creative pictures to make clients understand pro photography is much more than snapshots they see everywhere and everyday. Innovation and high-quality services and products are to me key to a successful photographer.

Are there any other wedding photographers whose work inspires you, can be a well know photographer or somebody you've stumbled across?

There are so many wedding photographers I admire for their innovative and creative shots that it’s hard to name them all!
