Tell us a little about yourself??

I'm a people photographer who is passionate about capturing emotions and atmosphere. My interest in photography started over 15 years ago on a trip to India, and I never tire of waiting for that perfect moment where I can make time stand still with my images.

How do you think or would like people to describe you?

Unassuming, kind, friendly, enthusiastic.

Tell us a little bit about the wedding day?

Photographing a wedding is full on. Once you arrive to photograph the bridal party getting ready you don’t stop till the guests sit down to eat. You have to be on high alert for hours to make sure you don’t miss those vital moments. It’s fun, it’s hard work and above all it’s rewarding.

How did you get into wedding photography?

I shot a wedding for a friend for free just over two years ago and loved it. I could transfer the self-taught skills I developed in my people photography from overseas to a wedding day and I’ve never looked back.

Pippa Heath image 4

How long have you been a wedding photographer?

Just over two years.

Can you share how you've made your wedding photography business a success? Any mistakes you made along the way?

I still feel the business is developing and will continue to do so for many years. Word of mouth is huge, and you don’t always have control over that but you do have control on getting out there and getting your name known. Wedding fairs have also been a great success for me too. Any mistakes you made along the way? Nothing too catastrophic yet!

What do you think a bride or groom should be looking for and not looking for in terms of wedding photography packages?

In my experience a bride and groom often don’t know what they are looking for or what to expect so often I am guiding them through the options. Simplicity is key – don’t have too many packages with too many options. It’s confusing for them. People generally all want the pre-wedding shoot, know they can have license to print any images they receive on their USB stick and want to know how long you will be staying on the day. Albums are also a big part of my business and many upgrade after the event.

Pippa Heath image 7

How do you advertise yourself and what for you has really worked?

Wedding fairs and word of mouth are my main sources of bookings. Google Adwords is also starting to have an impact.

Pippa Heath image 8

Why do you think people hire you?

From a photography point of view a lot of people say they love my natural images which capture lots of moments that aren’t set up. From a personal perspective, I think people find me approachable, friendly and subtle.

Pippa Heath image 9

How many weddings do you average per year?

15 to 20

Pippa Heath image 10

Whose wedding would you love to shoot?

Anyone who’s having a rustic outdoors type affair!

Pippa Heath image 11

If you were asked to shoot a destination wedding, where would you hope it would be?

Well I’ve been lucky to already shoot in France, Germany, Australia and Barbados so I can’t complain. I can’t wait to shoot in Tuscany, Italy next summer.

Pippa Heath image 12

What equipment do you have for a typical wedding day?

Two bodies – Canon 5D Mark II. Lenses: 24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8 and 85mm 1.2. Flash occasionally used at night.

Pippa Heath image 13

What is the most challenging thing about a wedding.

If the couple want lots and lots of group shots. That can turn a bit chaotic when trying to round people up. Also, assessing and knowing where the best light is going to be and what to do if the light is bad.

Pippa Heath image 14

Do you have an approach to a wedding?

Each wedding is so individual so I tune into the type of wedding it is and go with the flow picking out what I think is important and knowing who the key people are to photograph. My approach is always relaxed and to be unobtrusive.

Pippa Heath image 15

Who or what inspires you?

Seeing the world motivates me.

Pippa Heath image 16

Best & Worst marketing idea so far?

Best was when I was starting out and I need to get a civil partnership under my belt. During Pride in Brighton I wore a T-shirt specially printed which offered free gay wedding photography. Two guys took me up on the offer and it’s now led to me being the recommended photographer at the venue the CP was held (and hence lots of bookings as a result). Don’t have a worst yet!

Pippa Heath image 17

If you weren't a photographer, what would you be?

A travel writer.

Pippa Heath image 18

Share your favourite image of the day and why?

This one.

Do you have any goals for the future photography related or otherwise?

Continue to grow my business and see where it takes me. I have no fixed five/ten year plans…

Pippa Heath image 20

What do you think is key to being a successful wedding photographer?

Hard work, and knowing how to successfully run a business while not losing sight of why you are there in the first place – to take beautiful shots.

Pippa Heath image 21

Are there any other wedding photographers whose work inspires you, can be a well know photographer or somebody you've stumbled across?

Polly Alexandre without a doubt.

Pippa Heath image 22

Proudest moment so far. Photography related or otherwise?

Being shortlisted for the National Wedding Industry Awards this year in the most competitive South East category.
