It's the time of year when our thoughts inevitably turn to holidays, who among us wouldn't benefit from a lazy week on a warm beach or a brand new adventure to make us feel alive again?

In case you need any help with your holiday fantasies, we've pinpointed the top ten holiday destinations in the world, for everyone from beach bums to thrill seekers.

1. The Maldives

Why visit?

Sprinkled across the Indian Ocean, the islands of The Maldives are anyone's idea of paradise. With white sandy beaches, warm blue sea and some of the most luxurious resorts in the world, it is no surprise that royalty and plenty of celebrities frequent the islands.

What to do:
Indulge in an organic spa treatment at one of the islands' many resorts.
Snorkel or dive around the colourful surrounding reefs, and see if you can spot a turtle.
Relax on a quiet beach, accompanied by an ice cold cocktail and a great book.

2. South Island-New Zealand

Why visit?

It may not be the easiest place to get to, but New Zealand is worth the wait. While the North Island is not without its charms, the South Island is a paradise unto itself with a temperate climate, stunning natural scenery, and no shortage of activities.

What to do:
Swim with dolphins or go whale watching at Kaikoura.
Sample some of the world's best sauvignon blanc at the vineyards of Marlborough.
Unleash your inner daredevil with a bungee jump or skydiving trip around the gorges of Queenstown.

3. Tulum, Mexico

Why visit?

Mexico's new 'it' spot has taken over from Cancun as a haunt of the stars. This stunning beachside town is 1000 miles from Mexico City and 1,000,000 miles away from the stresses of city life.

What to do:
Dive through the breath-taking underwater lagoons.
Visit the Mayan ruins along the coast.
Sample the local tequila at the town's bars.

4. Tuscany, Italy

Why visit?

Foodies and wine lovers will feel right at home under the famous Tuscan sun. Situated in the centre of Italy, life moves more slowly in Tuscany and fresh food is everything.

What to do:
Sample the local wines. Chianti, Vin Santo and Brunello di Montalcino are favourites.
Eat everything, from pressed olive oil, to vine ripened tomatoes and fresh porcini mushrooms.
Hire a Vespa and see the countryside at your own speed.

5. Paris, France

Why visit?

It's the most romantic city in the world, full of the finest art and most exquisite style. Everyone has to go to Paris at least once (a year).

What to do:
Brave the queues and head up to the top of the Eiffel Tower.
Eat a fresh baguette with runny cheese in one of the city's many parks.
Get lost for an entire day at Le Louvre.

6. Namibia

Why visit?

Namibia has everything you would expect from an African oasis, and more. Stunning sand dunes; an incredible variety of wildlife, plus the warmest welcome you could imagine.

What to do:
Look for lions, cheetahs, rhinos and leopards on a local safari.
Trek through the Namib Desert on the back of a camel.
Gaze in awe at the stunning scenes along the Skeleton Coast.

7. Bora-Bora, French Polynesia

Why visit?

Reassuringly hard to get to, Bora-Bora is synonymous with romance and opulence. The island is quiet and accommodation is limited, so you will feel like you are living on your own private paradise. With butlers!

What to do?
Hire an over-water bungalow and start every day with a dip.
Shop for Tahitian pearls at the local boutiques.
Explore the island on horseback.

8. Iceland

Why visit?

The snowy island is full of hidden treasures, from the iconic Blue Lagoon, to the Aurora Borealis, and the raucous nightlife of Reykjavik. Bring your camera, it doesn't get more photogenic than this.

What to do:
Soak in the Blue Lagoon while getting an in-water massage.
Seek out the Northern Lights in the dark of winter.
Eat fresh fish and seafood right off the boat.

9. Rio de Janiero, Brazil

Why visit?

It has become the party capital of the world, and with good reason, where else would you see an entire city don sequins and hit the streets once a year?

What to do:
Hit the waves at the Copacabana Beach.
Climb up to the famous Christ the Redeemer statue that looks over the city.
Get involved with Carnival!

10. Cambodia

Why visit?

While Thailand has become more and more tourist-heavy in recent years, Cambodia has maintained its charm. Accessible yet exotic, it is the new place to be in South East Asia.

What to do:
Take in the past at the temple of Angkor Wat.
Trek through the jungle and look out for rare species such as the Asian elephant and water buffaloes.
Discover the pristine beaches of the Gulf of Thailand.
